STARS Lunch & LearNs

STARS Lunch & Learns are open to all STARS members and affiliates and focus on current research and practice trends in treatment and recovery, with an emphasis on peer supports, evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence. Held virtually on a regular basis, the Lunch & Learns typically include informal presentations and discussions to allow members to meet each other and to learn about new findings, applications, methods, and concepts that may be relevant to their work. March 20, 2024 | Data-driven Prevention Strategies for Community Development

Speakers Alex Hanlon, PhD, Professor of Practice and Director, Virginia Tech's Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science; Sarah Samis, Vice President of Health, GCOM; and William Ellis, Community Engagement Specialist and Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, GCOM will give an overview of how to approach data integration and data sharing across communities, empowering front-line substance use prevention professionals, academic research partners, and state and local agency staff to work together to prevent substance use overdoses and fatalities.


January 25, 2024 | Patient Engagement in Medication Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Melissa Poulsen, PhD, presented findings from her qualitative research on multilevel barriers and facilitators to patient engagement in clinic-based treatment for opioid use disorder and the outgrowth of that research to a new project that integrates peer recovery specialists into treatment settings.

 

October 25, 2023 | Movable

Kristen Lillvis, PhD, Stefan Schöberlein, PhD, and Hallie Knipp presented the Movable Project, a platform for people in Appalachia and beyond to share, highlight, and document stories of recovery. Discussion centered around the logistics of collecting and archiving stories, ethical and legal considerations, and opportunities to partner.

 

september 6, 2023 | Surry county, NC Ride the Road to Recovery

STARS members and staff from the Surry County, NC Office of Substance Abuse Recovery presented on an innovative transportation model for increasing access to services for people in recovery, Ride the Road to Recovery
